Christopher Tate is a modern jazz cellist, improviser, educator, and recording artist redefining the role of the cello in contemporary music. Based in Boston and studying at Berklee College of Music, Tate has quickly emerged as a distinctive voice on the instrument—bridging classical and jazz tradition, modern improvisation, and contemporary string playing with a highly personal sound.

Blending the harmonic sophistication of jazz with the expressive range of the cello, Tate approaches the instrument as both a melodic and rhythmic voice, drawing influence from saxophone language, modern harmony, and the lineage of improvisers who have expanded the boundaries of their instruments. His playing takes influence from straight-ahead jazz, genre-crossing collaborations, and contemporary creative music, positioning the cello in spaces it has rarely occupied as a frontline improvising instrument.

Tate has performed alongside and collaborated with an extensive range of acclaimed artists, including Derrick Hodge, Adam Blackstone, Vincent Herring, Alexa Tarantino, Marcus Printup, Eddie Barbash, Tony Trischka, Tia Fuller, Mike Block, Christian Howes, Tracy Silverman, Darol Anger, Zach Brock, Jason Anick, and Eugene Friesen. His versatility has also brought him into performances and projects for artists such as Jeezy, Usher, Rick Ross, Akon, Q-Tip, and 2chainz. Tate recently contributed to a collaborative project with The Wooten Brothers and John Clayton on “Make Me Like a Child,” an upcoming release featuring Yo-Yo Ma, where he worked directly with Victor Wooten to transcribe, adapt, and help develop the cello part from Wooten’s original bass concept.

As an educator, Tate is deeply committed to helping string players develop fluency in improvisation and modern musicianship. His teaching focuses on bridging the gap between classical training and creative freedom, helping students build practical harmonic understanding, ear training, rhythmic confidence, and improvisational vocabulary in an accessible and direct way. His workshops and clinics have been featured through organizations such as American String Teachers Association and Jazz Education Network, where he presents on improvisation, flow state, and harmonic thinking for string players.

In addition to private teaching and clinics, Tate teaches for Tracy Silverman’s Strum Bowing Academy, and serves on faculty for programs including Creative Strings Workshop, Clazz International Music Festival, and other summer intensive programs focused on improvisation and contemporary string playing.
